Teck — a Canadian mining company — views indigenous rights and engagement as a key element for the success of operations both in Canada and globally. As such, Teck, along with 21 other investors, formed the Capital for Aboriginal Prosperity and Entrepreneurship (CAPE) Fund in 2008. The purpose of the Fund is to drive long-term economic opportunities within indigenous communities. In providing businesses with capital and support, the Fund enables and promotes indigenous entrepreneurs and communities to pursue business opportunities, grow wealth and develop strong management skills within Aboriginal-owned businesses. The CAPE Fund is one of the largest private sector-backed social investment funds in Canada, valued at CAD50 million.
